For most of my journal images, I use a technique of putting marks and smears of paint over the existing layer of text. Later, I come back and giving myself time to ‘not know’ I allow the paint to lead the way, rather than my mind imposing preconceived ideas on the page. Images begin to emerge out of the paint marks and, one at a time, I start pulling them out and painting over the extraneous marks, never knowing what the final composition will be. I have the feeling that these images already exist and are just waiting for me to uncover them.
